I am honored to be representing Minnesota NAHRO as your President for the next two years. If you have questions or concerns regarding Minnesota NAHRO, please feel free to contact me, Shannon or any of the Board members. This is your organization and we want to make sure we are addressing members’ concerns. This is an exciting time for Minnesota NAHRO.
Minnesota NAHRO is gearing up for the 2012 Legislative session. The Session officially begins on January 24th. On January 25th the Legislative Committee will kick off the session with a meeting which includes visits with legislators. Minnesota NAHRO will be supporting a bonding bill for the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency in the amount of $40 million which will include both public housing rehabilitation bonds and housing infrastructure bonds.
We are also gearing up for our upcoming conferences. In March, we will be holding a Day at the Capital event jointly with the Economic Development Association of Minnesota (EDAM) and Minnesota Association of Professional County Economic Developers (MAPCED). This is a first year we will be having a joint Day at the Capital with other partners. Attendees will spend the morning preparing for meetings with lawmakers which will be held in the afternoon.
In May we will be holding our Spring Conference at Madden’s Resort in Brainerd. The Professional Development Committee is busy planning for the conference with a focus on human resource and legal issues which includes a two-day Nan McKay training on the ins and outs of informal hearings. In addition, it will include several different tracks of sessions for Section 8, Public Housing, Commissioners, Finance, Redevelopment and Professional Development.
We have also been exploring options to increase our membership. Executive Director Shannon Guernsey and our Membership Committee have been brainstorming about developing added benefits of becoming an individual member of Minnesota NAHRO. One of the benefits includes adding a member-only section to our website which will provide them access to a Resource Library. Minnesota NAHRO members have graciously agreed to share their forms, documents and policies. In addition, we will create a Member Forum which will provide a place for members to connect with their peers across the state. It will also provide an online knowledge community to help members share information and best practices.
